The artwork is great, the combat is fluid, and everything is well drawn and proportioned, which Toyotarou should be proud of given Toriyama’s unique and instantly recognizable art style. Goten says that Goku may go to “Kaio-sama” at some point, so it seems that this still conforms to Viz’s Buu arc translation in that they will sometimes be referred to as Kaio-shin and Kaio- sama instead, but mostly by their absurdly long titles…

Additionally, Supreme Kai is simply referred to as the Lord of Lords (and is found on the Planet of the Lord of Lords) while King Kai is referred to as the Lord of Worlds (and is found on the Planet of the Lord of Worlds). Satan, but otherwise we get “Son Goku” instead of just Goku, “Freeza” instead of Frieza, and “Boo” instead of Buu. The only other key difference here is that Majin Buu is out of Team Universe 7 because he fails the written test, whereas, like in the anime, he falls asleep during the test instead, only waking up once the tournament is over. Which is good, because in the anime they just appeared in the Champa arc as two people without any explanation…Ĭhapter 5 and onwards are pretty much in line with the animated version of Super’s Champa arc, obviously there’s little filler here, and it’s soon straight to the tournament. Battle of the Gods is cut down to four chapters, with all the fun scenes from Bulma’s birthday party cut (with a “see the Battle of the Gods movie for what happens at the party! note in the middle of a page…) and the fights between Goku and Vegeta against Beerus last a few squares each, even the big final confrontation! Chapter 4 then ends with a teaser for the F Resurrection storyline, but Chapter 5 then begins the Champa arc, skipping F Resurrection entirely. It then cuts to the start of a tournament between Universe 7 (“our” Universe) vs. This volume shows Goku gaining the power of a “Super Saiyan God” and challenging Beerus, the God of Destruction, to a showdown in order to save Earth, and eventually impressing the deity and his trainer Whis. They then both adapt Toriyama’s story arc, filling in gaps and fixing vague issues as they see fit (within reason, of course!), which means you get two versions of the same story, they have the same beginning and the same end, but often vary in the medium.
